Academic Honesty
Academic honesty is an essential aspect of all learning, scholarship, and research. It is one of the values regarded most highly by academic communities throughout the world. Violations of the principle of academic honesty are extremely serious and will not be tolerated.
Students are responsible for promoting academic honesty at Chaminade by not participating in any act of dishonesty and by reporting any incidence of academic dishonesty to an instructor or to a University official. Academic dishonesty may include theft of records or examinations, alteration of grades, plagiarism, and unauthorized and/or undisclosed AI usage, in addition to more obvious dishonesty. Questions of academic dishonesty in a particular class are first reviewed by the instructor, who must make a report with recommendations to the Director of the Academic College. Punishment for academic dishonesty will be determined by the instructor, Director, and the Dean of Academic College and may include an “F” grade for the work in question, an “F” grade for the course, academic notice, or dismissal from the University.
Student Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Academic Work
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly used in academic settings. For purposes of student academic work, AI includes, but is not limited to, generative AI platforms, automated writing or content generation tools, coding assistants, and similar technologies.
Students may use AI in a course only to the extent permitted by the instructor and the specific assignment directions. Students are responsible for ensuring that all work submitted for academic credit reflects their own learning and complies with course expectations, including any required disclosure or acknowledgement of AI use; disclosure should be sufficiently detailed to make the nature and extent of AI use clear to the instructor. Students are required to follow course and assignment specific AI instructions stated in the syllabus or otherwise provided by the instructor.
Unless expressly authorized by the instructor, students may not use AI to generate, edit, substantially complete, or materially alter graded work in a manner that substitutes for the student’s own knowledge, judgment, analysis, or skill.
Submitting AI generated or AI assisted work as one’s own without required authorization or disclosure, using AI in a manner prohibited by course or assignment instructions, or misrepresenting the extent of AI use constitutes academic misconduct. Students may be required to provide drafts, notes, revision history, or other information sufficient to demonstrate compliance with course AI requirements and authorship of submitted work. Alleged violations will be addressed under the University’s Academic Honesty and Academic Grievance procedures.
