Description

This college level reading course provides a foundation for students reading college level creative and critical texts. Particular emphasis is placed on identifying the purpose of a written artifact, identifying thesis statements and organizational structures, vetting the quality of the examples provided to support the thesis statement, and other key strategies for reading a critical essay. In addition, students will learn to evaluate creative readings and identify key themes and features of those texts in order to respond to those texts through oral discussion and writing. The reading skills emphasized in the course include the construction of reading guidelines, observing reading out loud techniques, and practice in reading longer college level essays (20-30 pages) across multiple disciplines. The passing grade for this class is a ‘C’ or higher.
